Lorenzo Marrucci:

Curriculum Vitae

Lorenzo Marrucci received his master degree and his PhD degree at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, in 1989 and 1993 respectively. After two years (1993-1994) spent as post-doctoral fellow in Y. R. Shen’s group, at the University of California - Berkeley (USA), in 1995 he joined again the University of Naples as university researcher and, since 2001, as associate professor of physics and head of the Nonlinear Spectroscopy Laboratory. In 2008, he spent about 4 months as invited visiting scientist in the Liquid Crystal Institute of Kent State University, Ohio (USA). He has been the coordinator of the Doctorate School of Physical Sciences of the University (2005-2010) and a member of the board of directors of the European Laboratory of Nonlinear Spectroscopy (LENS) in Florence (2007-2010). Marrucci has been in charge of several national research projects, including a FIRB project and a CNR contract ("commessa"), and is presently the coordinator of the FET-Open European project Phorbitech, involving research groups from the Universities of Glasgow, Bristol, Leiden and Roma Sapienza, and the ICFO center of Barcelona. His research interests include the nonlinear spectroscopy of material surfaces and interfaces, the photonics of complex optical materials such as liquid crystals, and the angular momentum of light, including quantum optical applications. In 2006 he invented the “q-plate”, a liquid crystal device for converting a variation of the spin angular momentum of light into orbital angular momentum, useful for quantum optical applications. He authored more than 90 papers on these topics and delivered about 25 invited lectures and colloquia.
