Personal Data

Marco La Commara was born in Napoli (I) the 13.X.1966. He is married and has got two kids. He likes reading and is fond of modern and contemporary history. He is fond of sports and of soccer in particular. From 1984 till 1994 he has been Official Referee of the Italian Federation of Soccer. In 1988 he won the atletic regional games racing in the team of the official soccer referees in the 400 mt speed race.

 

Academic Qualifications

 

ü      January 1992

Master degree in Nuclear Physics, University of Napoli. Thesis title: “Photon emission in deep inelatic heavy-ion collisions at energy between 5 and 10 A MeV”. Mark 110/110 magna cum Laude.

 

ü   June 1992 – October 1994

INFN young scientist yellow. He works in Napoli unity of INFN and his task is to develop charged particle detectors to be used in measurements on population of GDR in dinuclear system formed in heavy-ion collisions at low energy.

 

ü   November 1994 – June 1998

He got a fellowship from MURST (Department of University and Scientific and Tecnological Research) in order to support his PhD degree work. In the research program of the experiments he collaborated with, the systems investigated have been: 35Cl(271MeV)+64Ni, 35Cl(260MeV)+92Mo, 58Ni(500MeV)+58Ni, 32S(320MeV)+74Ge. His activity concerned both the improvement of the experimental arrays of charged fragments and photons and the data analysis, this latter based on the comparison between the experimental photon spectra and the calculated ones in the framework of the statistical model and on the study of the gamma-ray angular distribution.

He got his PhD degree. National committee judgment: very good.

 

ü      July 1998 – May 2000

Research associate (Post-Doc) at GSI, Darmstadt (D). He works at the Mass Separator device taking part to the group of beta-decay of nuclei close to 100Sn. He is responsible of U-183 EU supported experiment, whose goal is to measure exotic nuclei production cross-sections in the 100Sn region, via emission of complex fragments from light Barium isotopes.

 

ü   June 2000

He got a permanent staff position as Assistant Professor at the University of Napoli "Federico II" (FIS01/Experimental Physics). He joins the group of nuclear reaction mechanisms and goes on dealing with exotic decays and exotic nuclei production and corresponding structure studies. He is a member of the EXOTIC and of the PRISMA collaborations.

ü   September 2000-January 2001

He is visiting scientist at GANIL (Caen, F). The goal is to investigate the dependence of cluster emission probability on various entrance channel populating light isotopes of Barium, via the use of extended Hauser-Feschbach statistical evaporation codes.

 

ü   January 2002

He is co-spokesman of the E475S experiment, approved by the GANIL P.A.C., whose aim is to investigate the dependence of complex fragment emission on entrance-channel isospin asymmetry dependence in the complete fusion reaction 75Kr+40Ca forming the compound system 115Ba (see below scientific activity report for details).

He is elected as member of the board of directors of University of Naples, till October 2006. He is President of the Student activities committee. He is named by the Chancellor  his delegate to the universitary sport activities.

He is named President of the examination committee of Laboratory of Nuclear Physics, by the dean of the Faculty of Science.

 

ü      June 2005

As member of the PRISMA international collaboration, he has been appointed as spokesman for the Naples INFN unity by the national INFN responsible. He is the national official responsible, charged for the interfacement and the connection between the EXOTIC beam line and the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer, located at the LNL (Legnaro, Padova, I).

Marco La Commara

·        Light exotic-nuclei reaction mechanism studies at energy close to the Coulomb barrier.

 

He is a member of the EXOTIC collaboration, whose first main goal has been to design and set-up an exotic beam line at the LNL (Legnaro, Pd) aimed to the production of light radioactive ion-beams through inverse kinematic reactions. .In this framework he has been in charge of designing and setting a remote control system for the magnets and the Wien filter of the beam line. To this aim an automatic procedure to set the supplier currents has been build up, which is based on the continous comparison between the measured field values and the ones imposed via the graphic interface. Piloting on the basis of the fields indeed, in the case of the magnetic ones, rends the settino histeresis independent. The first exotic beam produced has been 17F, one among the most interesting proton-rich light isotopes. Indeed it has one more proton respect to the doubly magic, and therefore strongly stable, 16O and this proton is very weakly bound, being the separation energy only Ep=0.6 MeV, whereas the first excited state has energy E*=0.495 MeV, spin and parity Jp = ½+ and halo structure. The radioactive 17F-beam is produced using the LNL tandem 17O-beam impinging on a H2- (or a CH4-) target via the reaction p(17O,17F)n [1]; MLC has worked to the design and realization of  the gas-target. The 17F efficiency production has been measured as a function of the primary beam intensity. With a target thickness of about 1 mg/cm2, and considering a 102 mb reaction cross section, and with a primary beam current of a few tenths of mA an efficiency of 106 particles per second has been measured. At the Argonne National Laboratory (Chicago, IL, USA) the break-up cross section of 17F on 208Pb reaction has been measured, with determination of reaction produtcs linear momentum at incident energies of 5.A MeV with the aim of studying the cross section behaviour in proximity of the Coulomb barrier [2]. Furthermore, a new experimental array named EXODET [3] has been used for the break-up fragments simultaneous detection. The same array, on which MLC has worked in order to optimize the design and implement all the integrated electronics, has been utilized at RIKEN (Tokio, JP) in a measurement of elastic and inelastic scattering for the reaction 11Be on 209Bi, having the goal of investigating the influence of the projectile halo structure on the nuclear interaction potential and on the reaction cross sections.

 

 

 

·          Isospin asymmetry role in the emission of pre-equilibrium dipolar photons in heavy-ion collisions.

 

Nuclear reaction mechanisms at energy of 1.5-2 times the Coulomb barrier have been since the early years of MLC as a young researcher (INFN fellowship and PhD thesis) another research thematic on which he has been intensively involved. In the last 5 years several measurement runs have been carried out both at LNL and at LNS (Catania) INFN laboratories. Recently has been indeed evinced the emission of dipolar photons from the dinuclear system originating from a deep inelastic collision between two heavy ions [4]. One of the still not clarified aspect of this issue is the dipolar oscillation dependance on the entrance-channel isospin asymmetry. MLC has taken care of analyzing part of the data corresponding to the collisions 32S(Elab=298 MeV)+100Mo and 36S(Elab=320 MeV)+96Mo, relized at LNL, which lead to the formation of the same intermediate system 132Ce, populated in both the reactions with practically identical excitation energy and spin, the only difference being the initial charge asymmetry, that is the different value of the quantity [(N/Z)P – (N/Z)T], where N is the number of neutrons, Z the one of protons and the suffixes P and T stand for projectile and target. In the analysis carried by MLC the fusion and/or the quasi-fusion events have been selected, measured in coincidence with the dipolar photons. From the gamma multiplicity one can evince [5] that the dipolar strength increases with the initial charge asymmetry. Being this latter proportional to the quantity [(N/Z)P – (N/Z)T], it i salso proportional to the compound system initial dipole momentum, and its increasing with the entrance-channel isospin asymmetry is also conforted by microscopic dynamic calculations [6].

 

 

·          Production fo isotopes in the area of 100Sn via complex-fragment selective emission.

 

It has been showed that the emission of complex fragments (CF), so called also cluster, that is particles with Z such that 3<Z<12, is an intensive decay path for deficient-neutron Barium isotopes with excitation energy of about 1 A.MeV [7]. For cluster deexcitation of nuclei like 114Ba or 116Ba the residual nucleus can lie very close to the N»Z line, being the neutron emission strongly inhibited. The production cross section of the extremely exotic nuclei 99Cd, 100In, 101Sn and of the moderately exotic nucleus 102In, formed in the complete fusion reaction 58Ni(Elab=370 MeV)+58Ni via two decay paths in competion with each other, cluster emission from 116Ba* and light-particle multiple evaporation (p, n and/or a) from the same compound system, result to be comparable [8]. Nevertheless, the analysis leaded by MLC has pointed out that through CF emission it is possible to populate exotic nuclei in excited states not accessible via “standard” fusion-evaporation processes, or via multiple light-particle decay. In the wake of these remarkable statements, MLC has been analyzing the complete fusion reaction data 28Si(Elab=375 MeV)+92Mo, to the aim of verifying the possibile decay paths of the compound system 120Ba*, since an inusually large decay cross-section for  12C and 16O fragments is foreseen by statistical Hauser-Feschbach calculations [9]. Therefore, the cluster-decay mechanism lately has been remarkably ranked since it can allow the population of nuclei close to the doubly magic 100Sn whose investigation could shed light on still not solved questions as the “n-p pairing”, strictly connected to the isospin mixing, to the protonic drip-line exploration, to the proton-radioactivity island existence (103(?),105Sb, 109I, 112,113Cs) or a's one (106,107,108Te, 108,110I, 111,112Xe) up to astrophysical open problem as the r-p process, expected to end in proximity of 100Sn. The analysis is still in progress and the results are then not yet published; in a preliminar way one could state that there is a not negligible amount of 12C-fragments, emitted both in its ground state (the greater part) or in the first excited state (E*=4.44 MeV, a small part).

In this framework, MLC has calculated via the use of statistical Hauser Feschbach codes as BUSCO [9] the emission cross-sections of  12C from 116Ba, 92Pd, 114Ba, whaich are the compund system formed in the fusion reactions 58Ni+58Ni, 34Ar+58Ni and 56Ni+58Ni; BUSCO is based on the Hauser-Feschbach formula extended up to 400 evaporation channels and it foresees the emission of CF up to the 40Ca one. For the 58Ni+58Ni collision the calculations have been integrated by those performed by Gupta and co-workers, among which is MLC [10].

With the availability of Radioactive-Ion Beam facilities one could get very close to the drip lines. At GANIL (Caen, F) with the SPIRAL [11] it is possible to perform measurements with 75Kr radioactive beam. MLC is co-spokesman of a proposal, accepted by the PAC of that laboratory, whose aim is to investigate the the cluster emission from the compound system excited in the fusion reations 75Kr+40Ca. BUSCO calculations show that there is an enanchement in the CF decay emitted from 115Ba which would lead to population of the 102Sn isotope in yrast plan zones not accessible via light particle evaporation. INDRA array [12] will be utilized, the run is foreseen to take place in spring 2006.

 

 

·      b-decay studies of nuclei in proximity of the proton drip-line close to 100Sn.

MLC has been collaborating with the group of the “on-line” ISOL [13] of GSI (Darmstadt, D), which is a leading group in the field of b-decay of nuclides in proximity of the proton drip-line close to the doubly magic 100Sn. He partecipated a series of runs measuring b-decay of 102Sn, 103Sn [14], 94Ag, 95Ag [15], 96Ag [16] and the proton-decay of 105Sb. He has been spokesman for the run concerning the 94Ag nucleus, one of the heaviest odd-odd nuclei experimentally known, with N=Z lying exactly on the proton drip line, being the 93Ag unbound. The 94Ag structure has so been studied for the first time on the basis of the gammas emitted after the b+-decay, and measured in b-g and b-g-g coincidences. The outstanding results have been published in the work [17]. The spin Ip=7+of his first isomeric state has been evaluated, and its lifetime has been with better accuracy estimated, with respect to a former measurement [18], but above all for the first time the presence of a second isomeric state is evinced, whose spin, parity (Ip=21+) and half life have been estimated as well. Subsequently to the outcome of this experiment a second one, entirely devoted to the 94Ag structure has been performed, and MLC has been co-spokesman. A Total Absorption Spectrometer [19] at ISOL has been used; it allows to get infos on the Gamow-Teller decay strength of the decay populated after b+ emission from 94Ag in the daughter nucleus 94Pd. Interesting results have been published [20], [21].
